When it comes to Search Engine Optimization, there are specific SEO guidelines that are worth following. And if you’re looking to improve your website’s search engine visibility, following the guidelines set out by Google is a must.

But it can be a bit overwhelming. From meta title length to how many characters should be in your meta description, it’s a lot to remember. And that’s without taking website speed into account.

This list of guidelines encompasses all of the different numbers you need to know in the world of SEO.

SEO Guidelines for Content

In terms of content, here are some of the guidelines you should keep in mind when writing, optimizing and publishing content online. These SEO guidelines are incredibly important for On-Page SEO.

SEO Title Character Limit

SEO Guideline: Between 50 and 60 characters

The SEO title, also known as the meta title, plays a pivotal role in communicating the content of your web page to search engines and users. Keeping it between 50 and 60 characters ensures that it appears correctly in search engine results and is concise enough to captivate your audience. Some of the SEO guidelines recommend between 60 and 70 characters, but in my experience Yoast generally flags these as too long.

For instance, if you’re a travel agency specializing in adventure tours, an ideal meta title might be “Thrilling Adventure Tours | Discover Uncharted Wonders.”

If you’re working in WordPress, Yoast SEO will give you a guide that will show you when your title is too long, but there are also various online checkers.

Meta Description Length

SEO Guideline: Around 140 characters

Your meta description is the brief snippet that appears below the meta title in search results. Crafting an informative and enticing meta description within the 140-character limit can encourage users to click.

Continuing with the travel agency example, a compelling meta description could be “Embark on unforgettable adventures with our expertly guided tours. Discover hidden gems and create lasting memories.”

Some SEO guidelines recommend that meta description length should be 120 and 156 characters, but Yoast typically flags a meta description as too long at around 140. Because of this, I prefer to keep my metas between 120 and 140 characters.

H1 Tag

SEO Guideline: 1 per page

The H1 tag, or the main heading of a webpage, should be used sparingly. Each page should have one H1 tag that clearly conveys the topic of the page. Also, try to include your main keyword in the title.

For instance, if you’re a home décor store, the H1 tag on your “Living Room Furniture” page should read “Explore Our Living Room Furniture Collection.”

It’s worth keeping in mind that the H1 tag is not only an SEO guideline but also an essential user experience element. I often find website developers misuse H1s, adding multiple on a page due to how they look rather than what they mean. This is something worth keeping an eye out when optimizing your own website.

URL Slug

SEO Guideline: Between 3-4 words

The URL slug is the part of the web address that identifies a specific page. Keeping it concise and relevant to the page’s content is crucial. Be mindful of your website taxonomy as well.

For example, if you’re running a fitness blog and creating a page about “Healthy Eating Habits,” your URL slug could be “healthy-eating-habits.”

Keyword Density

SEO Guideline: 1-2% per page

Keywords are the backbone of SEO, and their strategic placement in your content is vital. Maintain a keyword density of 1-2% per page, ensuring that your content flows naturally.

You don’t want to fall in Black Hat SEO territory and end up keyword stuffing your pages. Not only is this bad for search, but it’s also not great for readability.

If you run an e-commerce store selling organic skincare products, ensure that your product descriptions naturally incorporate relevant keywords like “organic skincare” and “natural beauty products.” But don’t use the keyword in every single sentence.

If you need some help with keyword research, check out our keyword research checklist.

Alt Text

SEO Guideline: 120-130 characters

Alt text is a text description of an image, vital for accessibility and SEO. Ensure that your alt text is concise, descriptive, and under 130 characters. If relevant, you can also include keywords in your alt text.

For example, if you run a fashion e-commerce site and have an image of a red dress, the alt text could be “Red Evening Dress.”

Website Speed Guidelines

Beyond the traditional on-page SEO elements, website speed plays a significant role in your site’s performance and user experience.

Note: If you’re not sure about your site’s speed, you can use GTMetrix or PageSpeed Insights to check.

Here are some essential website speed guidelines:

Image Size

SEO Guideline: <200KB but as small as you can get it is ideal.

Page loading speed significantly impacts user experience and SEO. Compressing images to a size of less than 200KB without compromising quality is essential. It’s also worth keeping the image format your site uses into consideration (png vs jpeg vs webp).

For instance, if you’re a food blogger, it’s worth making sure the images of your recipes are optimized to load quickly, enhancing user satisfaction.

You can decrease image size and change the dimensions using an online tool. My all-time favorite is Image Resizer.

If you work in WordPress, another option to optimize image size is by using an image compression plugin like Smush or Optimole. You can also install a lazy loading plugin.

Largest Contentful Paint (LCP)

SEO Guideline: <2.5 seconds

Largest Contentful Paint (LCP) measures how quickly the largest content element on your page loads. Keeping it under 2.5 seconds ensures that users receive a fast and engaging experience.

Just think about how long you’re willing to wait for a website to load. That’ll give you a pretty good idea of how long other people are going to wait.

Whether you’re an e-learning platform or a news website, swift loading of your main content is non-negotiable.

First Input Delay (FID)

SEO Guideline: <100 milliseconds

First Input Delay (FID) evaluates the interactivity of your site. A fast FID, under 100 milliseconds, ensures that users can interact with your site without frustrating delays.

If you have a booking website, quick response times for date selection and payments enhance the user experience.

Cumulative Layout Shift (CLS)

SEO Guideline: < 0.1 score

Cumulative Layout Shift (CLS) is another website speed metric. It measures how stable your page layout is. Keeping it below 0.1 means that elements don’t unexpectedly shift, creating a smoother and more enjoyable browsing experience.

If you’ve ever experienced tapping a button on your phone and it is not working, this is likely due to CLS.

Whether you’re a blogging platform or an online store, a stable layout minimizes user frustration.

Mobile Page Speed

SEO Guideline: < 3 seconds

As mobile traffic continues to rise, ensuring that your website loads quickly on mobile devices is imperative.

You should aim for a mobile page speed of less than 3 seconds to retain and engage mobile users effectively. This is crucial for all types of websites, from local service providers to social media platforms.

Some sites even make use of AMP (Accelerated Mobile Pages) to speed up their mobile page speed.

Learn More About Guidelines for SEO

In the world of SEO, adhering to guidelines is your compass to success. And while reading about the different limits is useful, if you’re really interested in upping your SEO game, it might be worth looking into doing a free SEO course.

Curious about How to Use AI for SEO? Discover more about the best way to leverage artificial intelligence tools to enhance your Search Engine Optimization efforts and simplify your life. In the past year, AI has exploded.

With the release of ChatGPT and other related tools, the SEO industry has been buzzing with questions surrounding AI and how it affects SEO. This latest SEO trend is worth exploring.

I recently attended a webinar through Search Engine Journal about AI and SEO, and it offered a lot of insightful information that I’ve summarized (and added more info) below.

The Importance of Creating Quality Content

Google has placed a huge emphasis on quality content. With the Google Helpful Content Update, content quality has become a massive ranking factor. Google is constantly trying to reduce spam in their search results and give the user results that actually provide value.

Besides the importance of quality content for SEO, it also directly affects your bad image. If you’re putting out poor content, it will reflect on your brand, but it’s also going to reduce the likelihood of users converting or returning.

Using AI

The biggest concern with using AI for content creation is the quality of the content written. But if you can use AI to create content that’s both original and helpful, then there’s no reason not to use it as a tool.

Google’s current guidelines don’t penalize against the use of AI. Their priorities are content quality and utility. It’s also worth noting that AI-generated content is not considered plagiarism.

However, it’s not recommended that you use AI alone. You need to combine artificial intelligence with your own original ideas, experience, and human oversight. You can let AI do 80% of the work, but you’ll need to do the other 20% to make the content worth reading.

When I write using AI, I’ll often create unique guidelines for ChatGPT and then edit the content, adding my own experience and insights where possible. There are things that ChatGPT won’t know. It can provide an overall idea of the topic and offer you facts, but it can’t fully explain how things feel and your personal experience.

AI Means More Competition

There’s no doubt that AI makes writing and content creation a lot easier. As a result, competition in the SERP is going to increase. But it’s predicted that content that’s created by a human will stand out more.

How to Stand Out in the Age of AI Content?

If you want to stand out in the search results, it’s all about real-life experiences. AI is a great springboard, but you have to include original thoughts and research. If you’ve got a list of content ideas, prioritize topics that you have first-hand knowledge of, as those will be the most unique.

It’s worth publishing original research. Include data based on your own efforts, include survey results, or include case studies. You can also add in detailed guidelines.

Another great way to ensure original content is by using original visual content like graphs or your own infographics. Also, don’t be afraid to use screenshots or annotated images. Include videos, GIFs

If you don’t have first-hand experience, you can always interview a product manager, influencer, entrepreneur, or industry thought leader.

Leverage E-E-A-T

E-E-A-T comes from Google’s Search Quality Rater Guidelines and isn’t considered a direct ranking factor. But it’s a good way to ensure your content is valuable.

E-E-A-T stands for:

Experience

Expertise

Authoritativeness

Trustworthiness

As AI-generated content increases online, originality and E-E-A-T signals are becoming essential. Experience is what will set you apart online.

Off-Page Authority Signals

Off Page SEO signals to Google that you are trustworthy. Backlinks and mentions online are valuable in showing Google that you know what you’re doing.

Check Your Facts

AI isn’t flawless, it can get things wrong or misunderstand things. Don’t trust everything that AI tells you, and always edit your work.

If you’re using the free version of ChatGPT, it is outdated since it hasn’t been updated since September 2021. So, it’s worth keeping this in mind if you’re writing about a topic that has changed since then.

Editing AI Content

When it comes to editing, here are some of the main things to look out for/remember:

Elaborate on sections that may be vague and rather get rid of generalizations.

Remove repeated phrases and repetition of information (I find ChatGPT uses “Remember” quite frequently.

Ensure style and tone of voice align with your website (You can give the AI some guidance on your website style to make things easier).

Add in your own HUMAN experience.

Don’t Forget About Other Channels

While your blog and website are great resources, don’t neglect things like social media and video search. Share your content, create unique stuff, and show your humanity.

Navigating AI as a Human

My LinkedIn feed is full of tips on how to use AI for SEO, how to optimize your prompts, and plenty of opinions regarding this hot topic.

ChatGPT isn’t perfect. There have been plenty of times when I’ve wanted to throw my laptop out of frustration because the answers I’ve been given aren’t what I’m looking for. This is where prompts come in. You need to be able to tailor your prompts to get what you want. You’ll never get the answers you’re looking for if you don’t ask the right questions.

Treat AI Like A Person

Think of the AI like a person and talk to it like a person. Make your prompts as specific and as detailed as possible. Give the AI information that it can use and teach it about what you want.

It’s probably not going to get it right on the first try. You’ll likely have to use follow-up questions or multi-step prompts to get the answers you’re looking for. And if it’s still not getting it right, tell it. If it really doesn’t understand what I’m saying, I’ll type in “You’re not understanding me,” and it will likely apologize and try different approaches.

If you’re not sure the information given is reliable, ask for proof so you can check the sources yourself.

Take Advantage of the Versatility of AI

AI’s like ChatGPT can do more than just write. They can analyze data, create tables, compare items, and more.

If you want to use AI for SEO, you’ll likely have to do a bit of legwork. Do keyword research, analyze search intent, create a persona, and review your competitors. You can use tools like ChatGPT to do some of this for you, but now SEO tools like Ahrefs and SEMrush are offering ways to leverage AI on their platforms.

Experiment with AI

AI is a tool that you need to learn how to use. It has vast capabilities and it will take time for you to fully understand them. It may be worth looking into free SEO courses on AI or following people who focus on prompt engineering.

Work On Your AI Prompts & Document What Works

If you find a prompt that works well for you, save it in a spreadsheet somewhere so you can use it again.

I’ve created my own little list now to help me navigate using AI for SEO, and it really does help. AI can help you save time, but in order to get to that point, you may need to battle through some frustration.

Ways to Use AI in SEO

Here are just a few of the ways you can use AI in SEO:

Keyword research

Persona creation

General research

Data analysis

On Page Optimization

Identify content gaps

Compare content

Page audits

Internal linking

Final Thoughts on How to Use AI For SEO

Using AI for SEO is a process. It’s not a complete solution that’ll push your site to the top of the SERPs. You’re still going to have to use your brain, work with human editors, and put time and effort into your content. While it won’t take as long as it used to, quality content creation still requires work.

While you could use AI to generate batches of articles for your site without checking or optimizing them, it’s not going to benefit you or your website.

The good news is, if you invest time and energy into your blog posts, it will likely pay off.

When it comes to blogging, coming up with fresh and engaging topics can be a challenge. Use these 12 small business blog ideas to get inspired.

When it comes to digital marketing, content writing remains a cornerstone of small business marketing strategies. These small business blog ideas can act as catalysts that can propel your online presence, connect with your audience, and establish your brand as an authority in your niche.

Content Ideas for Small Businesses

While SEO trends may change, one thing has remained true no matter the algorithm update: Content is king. But it’s not always easy to know what to write about or the kind of blog topics that will resonate with your customers.

These small business blogging ideas will help act as a springboard to get you inspired and help your business stand out online.

Whether you’re offering tips, sharing insights, or simply addressing industry trends, your audience will appreciate content that offers value. Let’s explore some of the best sources for small business blog ideas.

1. Tell Your Brand Story

Authenticity and transparency resonate with consumers. Your brand’s story is a powerful tool to connect with your audience. Use your small business blog to share your journey, the challenges you’ve overcome, and your vision for the future.

For example, a small artisanal coffee roastery might tell the story of their founder’s passion for sourcing the finest coffee beans from around the world.

2. Talk About Your Employees

Your team is an essential part of your business. By highlighting the people behind the brand, you humanize your company, making it more relatable to your customers.

Introduce your employees to your readers. Share their roles, contributions, and a bit about their personalities.

For instance, a small family-owned restaurant could feature stories about their chef’s favorite recipes or their front-of-house team’s customer service anecdotes.

3. Use Frequently Asked Questions for Inspiration

One of my personal favorite places to look for ideas for blog content is with customer FAQs. Answering common questions not only provides valuable information but also positions you as an expert in your field. Your blog can serve as a knowledge hub for your audience.

If you run a tech support business, you can write articles addressing frequently asked tech-related questions, like “How to Speed Up Your Computer” or “Common Solutions for Internet Connectivity Issues.”

I often get asked by my yoga students where to buy aerial yoga hammocks or what clothes to wear to aerial yoga, so I turned both of these into blog posts.

4. Flesh Out Infographics

Visual content is a powerful tool. You can find plenty of them online, and they are a great source of inspiration. When I’m not sure what to write about for my anxiety blog, I head to Pinterest and find ideas from infographics. Then, I flesh them out into longer blog posts that provide more information.

You can elaborate on infographics by explaining the data, providing context, and offering insights. This will help you engage both visual and text-oriented learners. You can also create an infographic for your customers to download.

5. Stay Up To Date on the Latest News and Events

When it comes to blogging for small business owners, keeping your audience informed about industry news and events is a great place to search for ideas. Through this, they not only showcase your industry knowledge but also position your blog as a valuable resource. You can also provide commentary or insights.

If you own a marketing agency, you could write about the latest trends in social media advertising, or cover key takeaways from industry conferences or webinars.

6. Read Through Online Forums

Online forums can be a goldmine of information and ideas. By engaging with these communities, you can discover trending topics, pain points, and interests of your target audience.

For example, if you operate a pet grooming business, you might come across a forum thread discussing common pet care challenges and then create a post addressing those issues with expert advice.

7. Leverage ‘People Also Ask’ Box in Google

Google’s ‘People Also Ask’ box is a great place to find questions that people are actively seeking answers to. Use this as a source of inspiration for your blog posts.

For example, let’s say you run a gardening supply store. You could write an article answering a question like “How to Choose the Right Soil for Your Garden” and include your products in the solutions you provide.

8. Interview Thought Leaders

Collaborating with thought leaders in your industry can add authority and credibility to your small business blog content. It’s also a great way to tap into their existing audience.

A great example is if you operate a boutique fashion store, you might interview a well-known fashion blogger or designer, discussing the latest trends and their take on timeless fashion pieces.

9. Team Up With Non-Competitive Brands

Partnering with complementary businesses can broaden your reach and offer a fresh perspective to your audience. Sharing each other’s content can be a win-win.

As a local winery, you could collaborate with a gourmet cheese shop. You can use your blog to create content about wine and cheese pairings. This benefits both businesses and provides unique value to your readers.

10. Conduct Keyword Research

To ensure that your blog posts reach the right audience, keyword research is crucial. Understanding what terms your potential customers are searching for (and the types of keywords) can inform your content strategy.

Research keywords and phrases relevant to your niche to identify what your target audience is searching for. If you own a digital marketing agency, you might discover keywords like “SEO tips for small businesses” and create content around this topic.

You can use this keyword research checklist to guide you through the process.

11. Share Your Own Experiences

Personal stories and experiences can be incredibly relatable. Sharing your journey, challenges, and successes can foster a sense of connection with your readers.

For example, if you run a travel agency, you could write about your most memorable travel experiences, inspiring your readers with stories and tips from your adventures.

12. Scope Out What Your Competitors Are Doing

Your competitor’s blog posts topics are a great place to find inspiration. Not only that, but you can also use their blog as a strategic approach to gain valuable insights and stay ahead in the game.

Regularly keeping tabs on what your competitors are doing can spark new ideas, identify gaps in your own strategy, and help you differentiate your brand.

Importance of Blogging for Small Businesses

If you’re looking for the best free SEO courses for website owners, this list offers a comprehensive guide to the top online learning platforms that won’t cost you anything.

You’d be surprised at how many great SEO courses are completely free. Companies like Ahrefs, SEMrush, SERanking, and even Hubspot have incredible courses that’ll teach you the basics of SEO.

Whether you’re a beginner or an experienced webmaster, these free SEO courses offer valuable insights and practical skills.

Find The Best Free SEO Course Online

As a website owner, there’s no doubt about the importance of SEO (Search Engine Optimization) and digital marketing in driving traffic and reaching your target audience.

However, the cost of courses and training programs can add up quickly. That’s where free online resources come to the rescue. From learning about keyword research to mastering WordPress SEO, there’s something for everyone.

Here are some of the best free SEO courses and digital marketing resources available:

SEMrush Academy

The SEMrush Academy has many different courses for learning about all types of SEO. They also have courses related to digital marketing, content marketing, PPC, and even email marketing.

It’s one of my favorite online resources, and it won’t cost you anything. They do push their own products in the courses, but it’s not unbearable.

SERanking

There are plenty of courses on SERanking, and they’re adding more all the time. When I started, they only had the SEO basics course, but since then, they’ve added courses on content SEO.

Their SEO basics course is great. It’s honestly one of the best intro courses I’ve done, and I’d definitely recommend it. It doesn’t push the actual tool too much, focusing rather on the basics of SEO.

Ahrefs

Another place to find free SEO courses is through another leader in the search industry, Ahrefs Academy. They have courses on blogging, link building, and tool-specific courses to help you get certified.

I’ve only done one course through Ahrefs, and it was back in 2020 when I was completing my SEO internship. The course was decent, but I didn’t find it extremely impactful. I am planning on exploring more of their courses in the future.

Often, SEO job listings request knowledge about tools like Ahrefs and SEMrush, so getting certified by one of these platforms can be useful.

Grow with Google

Google has a couple of its own free online courses. They don’t have any SEO-specific courses but they do have plenty of courses that cover digital marketing and relevant tools that you’ll use for SEO.

Google also has a Google Analytics Academy where you learn more about this powerful digital marketing tool. Additionally, you can explore Google’s Skillshop.

I haven’t explored these courses as of yet (besides getting my Google Analytics Certification), but they do seem quite decent and worth a shot.

Hubspot

Hubspot has a variety of free online courses, including ones related to SEO. They’ve also got courses on WordPress, paid media, Facebook marketing, content marketing, and so much more.

I haven’t actually done any of their courses, so I can’t attest to how good they are, but Hubspot does have an excellent reputation in the digital world. But they’re free, so definitely worth a shot.

Webinars

Another great way to learn more about Search Engine Optimization and keep up with current SEO trends is through webinars. You’ll be able to learn from industry experts, make connections, and even ask questions.

I’ve done a few, and I’ve found them to be really beneficial and would definitely recommend it.

The following platforms offer great SEO webinars:

Search Engine Journal (check out upcoming and past webinars here)

SEMrush (check out their past webinars here)

Paid SEO Courses

If you don’t mind forking out some money, there are some decent paid SEO courses available online.

LinkedIn Learning

I love LinkedIn Learning (previously Lynda.com). But I consider it a bit pricey. You do get a lot for your money, though. It works out to be about $20 a month. If you’re an avid LinkedIn user, it might be worthwhile.

I do recommend using the free trial they offer, though. You get access to everything for a month, and if you have spare time, you can do plenty of courses during the period (and it won’t cost you anything). They recently offered me another free trial, and I managed to do 4 courses in the month, including one on HTML basics.

And when I canceled my subscription, they offered me two months for the price of one.

LinkedIn Learning has plenty of courses related to all different types of SEO, including on-page, off-page, and technical SEO. Completing the courses also looks great on your LinkedIn profile, which helps if you’re applying for jobs or even starting your own business.

Udemy

If you’re happy to pay for an SEO course, Udemy has plenty of options. Most of them have reviews from other learners, so you can get a good idea of what the course has to offer. And if you keep an eye out on Udemy, you might even find a course at a discounted price. I’ve gotten some really great courses for less than $10.

Moz Academy

Moz is another big name in the SEO world, and they have a collection of SEO courses. However, they aren’t free. The courses range from $49 dollars to $595.

I’m not sure how good these courses are since I haven’t done any of them myself, but Moz has a good reputation in the industry.

Other Free SEO Courses

Here are some other free SEO courses. I haven’t tried any of them myself, but I’ve seen them recommended by other companies.

As a website owner, it’s vital to know the difference between Black Hat vs White Hat SEO. There are plenty of SEO techniques out there, and some of them are more ethical than others.

In the realm of SEO (Search Engine Optimization), two distinct approaches emerge as the yin and yang of digital marketing: Black Hat SEO and White Hat SEO.

These terms might sound a bit mysterious. However, they play a crucial role in determining the ethical and effective strategies for optimizing websites and improving search engine rankings.

These approaches can be applied to all types of SEO. In this article, we’ll explore the key differences between Black Hat vs White Hat SEO, provide insights into both techniques, and offer a glimpse into the world of ethical White Hat SEO services.

What is White Hat SEO?

White Hat SEO is the virtuous side of SEO, often likened to the “good guys” in the digital marketing world. This approach strictly adheres to search engine guidelines, emphasizing ethical practices and a user-centric approach.

White Hat SEO experts are committed to creating high-quality, valuable content that caters to the needs of users. Additionally, they aim to establish a website’s authority through legitimate means, emphasizing transparency, integrity, and an unwavering commitment to long-term success.

SEO White Hat Techniques

White Hat SEO encompasses various legitimate techniques designed to enhance a website’s search engine ranking while delivering genuine value to users. Some key White Hat techniques include:

Quality Content Creation: Producing relevant, informative, and engaging content that resonates with your target audience.

Keyword Research: Conducting comprehensive keyword research to identify and use the most relevant keywords strategically.

On-Page Optimization: Prioritize On-Page SEO Optimization and focus on optimizing meta tags, headers, and content structure for improved visibility.

Quality Link Building: Acquiring high-quality backlinks for SEO from authoritative and reputable sources through genuine engagement.

Mobile Optimization: Ensuring that websites are mobile-friendly and provide a seamless experience for users on all devices.

What is Black Hat SEO?

Conversely, Black Hat SEO can be likened to the “dark side” of SEO. This approach focuses on manipulating search engine algorithms to achieve quick, albeit short-lived, gains in search rankings.

Additionally, Black Hat practitioners often engage in tactics that violate search engine guidelines, such as keyword stuffing, cloaking, and link spamming.

While these tactics might yield immediate results, they come with severe risks, including penalties that can result in a website’s removal from search engine results altogether.

Black Hat SEO Techniques

Black Hat SEO employs unethical and manipulative tactics to achieve quick but risky results.

Some common Black Hat techniques include:

Keyword Stuffing: Overloading content with excessive keywords to manipulate search engine rankings.

Cloaking: Displaying different content to search engines and users to deceive search algorithms.

Link Spamming: Generating numerous low-quality or irrelevant backlinks to artificially inflate a website’s authority.

Content Duplication: Replicating content from other sources or using automated content generation to create duplicate content.

Private Blog Networks (PBNs): Setting up networks of websites to create artificial backlinks, often in violation of search engine guidelines.

SEO White Hat vs Black Hat Comparison Table

Let’s take a closer look at Black Hat vs White Hat SEO and the key differences between them.

Aspect

White Hat SEO

Black Hat SEO

Ethical Approach

Follows search engine guidelines

Violates search engine guidelines

Content Quality

Emphasizes high-quality, valuable content

Often relies on low-quality or duplicate content

User-Centric

Prioritizes user experience and satisfaction

Focuses on manipulating search results

Long-Term Viability

Sustainable, long-term success

Short-term gains, high risk of penalties

Link Building

Gathers backlinks organically through valuable content

Engages in manipulative link schemes

Transparency

Transparent and accountable

Often secretive and deceptive

Keyword Usage

Employs keyword research strategically

Engages in keyword stuffing and manipulation

Learn more about Search Engine Optimization with these SEO facts.

The digital world is always changing, and there’s a lot of confusion and misinformation out there.

This is especially true in the realm of SEO, which often appears enigmatic and filled with misconceptions.

There is no denying the role that SEO plays in determining a website’s success, it’s vital for website owners to properly understand this channel and the hierarchy of SEO needs.

To properly optimize your website for SEO, there are a couple of facts about SEO that are worth noting.

SEO Is Not About Cheating Google

One common misconception is that SEO is all about trying to outsmart search engines like Google. But you can’t cheat Google (and every algorithm update makes it harder and harder to do so). Black hat techniques aren’t sustainable and can often do more harm than good.

Instead of attempting to cheat the system, think of SEO as a means of convincing Google to rank your page. You can achieve this by showcasing the genuine value you offer to users.

Focus on providing quality content, user-friendly experiences, and relevant information. If you do this, you’ll naturally improve your website’s search engine rankings.

SEO Is Not About Hacks

There are no hacks when it comes to SEO. If you’re looking for shortcuts or secret hacks to get your website to the top, you’ll likely be disappointed. What you will find are various techniques, cheat sheets, and strategies.

It’s an SEO fact that the key to ranking is to consistently execute the basics effectively. Invest time and energy into various types of SEO, optimizing your website’s structure, content, and user experience. These fundamental techniques are the key to long-term success in SEO.

SEO Is a Long-Term Game

SEO is not a sprint; it’s a marathon. The results of your SEO efforts probably won’t become evident overnight. More often, it takes time for search engines to recognize and reward your optimization efforts.

You’ll need patience, dedication, and a commitment to long-term growth when it comes to search engine optimization. Building a strong online presence through SEO is a gradual process that yields sustainable results over time. To better understand how this works, check out our post on the Sailboat Analogy.

Knowing Your Audience Is Key

One of the most important SEO facts is that Google wants to give its users the best experience and answer their questions effectively. You should always keep this in mind because understanding your target audience is a cornerstone of effective SEO.

To craft content that resonates with your audience and addresses their needs, you must conduct thorough research. Keyword research, user behavior analysis, creating personas, and uncovering demographic insights are invaluable tools for tailoring your SEO strategy to your audience’s preferences and interests.

SEO Is More Than Just Installing an SEO Plugin

While I love SEO Plugins like Yoast SEO, optimizing your site for search engines is more than just installing a plugin.

Plugins for SEO are incredibly helpful and can effectively streamline your SEO efforts. They allow you to optimize meta tags, generate sitemaps, and control indexing. But without a proper SEO strategy, these things won’t have much impact.

It’s important to keep in mind that SEO is a multifaceted discipline that extends beyond installing a plugin. Rather, plugins should be viewed as tools within a broader strategy. A successful SEO approach encompasses technical, on-page, and off-page optimizations, content creation, and user experience enhancements.

You’re Never “Done” With SEO

The SEO landscape is constantly evolving, and search engines frequently update their algorithms. This means that SEO is an ongoing process, not a one-time task.

Staying up-to-date with the latest SEO trends and industry updates and then adapting your strategy accordingly is crucial. Continuous optimization and refinement of your website’s SEO elements ensure you remain competitive in the digital space.

The best way to stay on top of your SEO is through Monthly SEO services.

SEO Is Just One Part of The Puzzle

The last fact about SEO is that it is just one piece of the digital marketing puzzle. No amount of optimization can compensate for a subpar product or service.

To achieve lasting success, you must also focus on delivering exceptional value to your customers. SEO can drive traffic to your website, but it’s your product or service’s quality and relevance that will ultimately retain and convert visitors into loyal customers.

Summary of Facts About SEO

When it comes to digital marketing, understanding the facts about SEO is paramount to achieving online success. By debunking common myths and embracing these seven essential insights, you’ll be far better equipped to navigate the intricate realm of SEO.

Above all, SEO is not about cheating search engines but about offering genuine value to users. It’s a continuous, long-term endeavor that, when done right, can propel your website to new heights of visibility and success in the digital world.

One of the simplest ways to understand how different Digital Marketing channels work is though the Sailboat analogy. This metaphor explains how each type of online marketing influences your website and your brand.

As a website owner, the online space can feel overwhelming. And with all the digital marketing channels out there, it can be hard to keep track of which ones to invest in and the value that they add.

Learn about each type of digital marketing and how they can work for your business by using the Sailboat Analogy.

Quick Overview of Digital Marketing

Digital marketing is a comprehensive strategy that leverages online channels and technology. Through this medium, businesses can promote products, services, or brands, aiming to reach and engage with a targeted audience. It encompasses various tactics such as SEO, social media, email marketing, and paid advertising to drive awareness, customer acquisition, and business growth in the digital landscape.

Forms of Digital Marketing

Here are the main forms of digital marketing available to businesses:

SEO (Search Engine Optimization): SEO is the art of optimizing your website’s content and structure to rank higher on search engine results pages. This digital marketing form is responsible for driving organic traffic and improving online visibility.

Paid Ads: Paid advertising encompasses various forms, such as Google Ads, Facebook Ads, and display ads. This type of digital marketing allows businesses to reach a wider audience by paying to display their content prominently on platforms and search engine results pages.

Branding: Branding is the process of creating a unique and memorable identity for your business. It includes elements like logos, colors, and messaging to establish a strong and recognizable presence in the market.

Email: Email marketing involves sending targeted messages to a list of subscribers, fostering customer relationships, promoting products or services, and nurturing leads through personalized and automated email campaigns.

Social Media: Social media platforms like Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, LinkedIn and Twitter offer powerful channels for businesses to connect with their audience. They provide the perfect platform to build a community and promote products or services through engaging content.

The Sailboat Analogy in Digital Marketing

Imagine your website as a simple sailboat complete with a sail, a motor, and two oars. In this situation, your website is the actual boat, and the different marketing channels are the different elements that make the boat go forward.

Each element propels the boat forward in a different way and requires a varying level of effort from you.

SEO – Sail

Paid Advertising – Motor

Branding – The Flow of the Ocean

Email – Oar

Social – Oar

SEO – The Sail

With a boat, once you set the sail, you can just sit back and watch the boat go forward. You’ll need to make adjustments to the sail every so often. You may need to turn the sail to catch the wind better or adjust it if you want to change direction.

It requires minimal effort once it’s properly set up, but you’ll still need to keep an eye on it to make sure you’re going the right way.

This is an excellent analogy for SEO. Once properly set up, SEO is a cost-effective digital marketing channel that doesn’t require a lot of energy. It doesn’t propel you forward very quickly, but when you catch the wind just right, your site will soar.

Paid Advertising – The Boat Motor

Like the motor of a boat, Paid Advertising sends you forward quickly and swiftly. It gives you a huge boost as soon as you turn it on. But when you turn off the motor, the boat comes to a standstill.

It’s great if you need to get somewhere quickly (e.g. boost sales for Christmas or promote an end-of-season special), but it’s not sustainable over a long period of time. Additionally, the motor needs fuel (money) to keep going.

You’ll also need to keep a close eye on it because if it turns out you’re going in the wrong direction, it can be quite costly (this is why you’ve got to set up your negative keywords).

Branding – The Flow of the Ocean

Your company brand is important. Without it, you’ll be lost. You have to ensure that your products or services are serving the needs of your customers. Your brand awareness is like the flow of the ocean. It requires no effort at all.

If you decide you want to kick back and bask in the sun, your brand will keep you going. It is the single most powerful asset you have.

Email Marketing – The Oar

When you want to go a little faster or change direction, you’ll need to use an oar. While they get you places faster than SEO or branding, it requires constant effort and energy. You’ll have to sit and paddle in order to keep going.

Email marketing requires a lot of effort and energy. It’s incredibly powerful and an awesome way to boost your brand and connect with your audience. But if you stop paddling, you stop moving as fast.

Social Media Marketing – The Other Oar

The other oar of your website’s sailboat is Social Media Marketing. As with Email Marketing, it requires consistent effort in order to keep moving.

If your brand needs a boost, but you don’t want to turn on your boat engine or the wind isn’t blowing hard enough, your oars are a huge asset. Even a simple stroke through the water can propel you forward slightly.

But you need to monitor your social channels, funnel time and energy into them, and get paddling if you want to go anywhere. As soon as you take your oar out of the water, it is made redundant.

Navigating the Digital Marketing Sailboat Analogy

Knowing which digital marketing channels to use at the right time is an art. Deciding where to place your energy and your money can be tricky, especially if you aren’t experienced in the digital world.

To give your website its best chance, you’ll likely need all of the channels mentioned in this post. But if you’ve got a limited budget, then it’s important to choose where to place your energy. This is why using the sailboat analogy is really useful.

Working on your brand is essential for small businesses, but investing in different types of SEO is another solid option to get you started. While the sail picks up wind, you can focus your energy on social media or email marketing. And when your budget grows, you can start with paid ads.

Engage in PR

What is Off Page Optimization in SEO?

Off-page optimization in SEO refers to strategies and techniques that are done outside your website to improve its search engine ranking.

Off page SEO strategies include building high-quality backlinks, social media engagement, and online reputation management.

These techniques can enhance your website’s authority and trustworthiness, ultimately boosting its visibility in search engine results and attracting more organic traffic.

Off-Page SEO Checklist Explained

Off Page Optimization in SEO is a little complicated. If you’re not sure what any of the above tasks entail, here is an explanation of each item on our checklist. If you have any more questions, it might be worth reaching out to an Off-Page SEO Specialist and investing in off page SEO services.

Analyze competitor backlink profiles:

Start by studying your competitors’ backlinks. Then, identify their sources and strategies to uncover potential link-building opportunities and strategies that work in your niche.

Conduct a link intersect analysis:

Use well-known off-page SEO tools like Ahrefs, SE Ranking, Moz or SEMrush to find websites that link to your competitors but not to you. Then, it’s time to reach out to these sites for relevant link-building opportunities.

Turn unlinked mentions into links:

Monitor brand mentions using tools like Google Alerts and reach out to websites mentioning your brand without linking. Your next move is to request them to convert those mentions into backlinks to your website.

Set up and optimize your Google Business Profile:

For local businesses, a well-optimized Google Business Profile is a must-have. This tool enhances visibility in local search results.

Your job is to ensure all details are accurate and up-to-date. It’s also worth using all the latest features.

Check your domain authority:

Use tools like Moz’s Domain Authority checker to gauge your website’s authority (also known as Domain Trust). You should aim to build high-quality backlinks to improve this score over time.

Use local directories for local SEO:

List your business in reputable local directories like Yelp, Cylex, HotFrog and Yellow Pages to boost local SEO efforts. Additionally, you’ll need to add your business manually to popular citation sites. It can be time-consuming, but it is useful.

Ensure consistent NAP in citations:

Your Name, Address, and Phone Number (NAP) should be consistent across all online citations and directories to improve local SEO. If there are inconsistencies, you’ll be viewed as untrustworthy.

Encourage reviews and testimonials:

Positive reviews not only build trust but also influence local SEO. While it can feel awkward, you should encourage satisfied customers to leave reviews on platforms like Google Business, Facebook or Yelp.

Engage with industry influencers:

Word of mouth is important, even online. Make it a priority to build relationships with influencers in your industry. Also, their endorsements can lead to valuable backlinks and increased visibility.

Steal your competitor’s broken backlinks:

Another one of the more popular SEO off page techniques is to identify your competitors’ broken backlinks and reach out to the websites linking to them, offering your content as a replacement. You’ll be helping them out and hopefully getting a backlink in return.

Implement the Skyscraper technique:

The Skyscraper technique has become a unique way to accumulate valuable backlinks. Create superior, comprehensive content on popular topics in your niche. Then, start outreach to websites linking to similar content and suggest they link to yours instead.

Share content on social media:

SEO and social media may seem like they’re worlds apart. But this isn’t true. You should always promote your content on social media platforms to increase its reach. By doing this, you could also potentially attract backlinks from interested parties.

Guest post on reputable sites:

A great off page SEO strategy is writing guest posts. Aim to write guest posts for authoritative websites in your niche. In return, you can include a backlink to your site, enhancing your authority and traffic.

Participate in relevant forums:

Engage in industry-related forums and discussions. Share your expertise and include your website link where relevant. You can look into sites like Quora or Reddit.

Monitor and remove bad links:

Off page SEO isn’t just about reaching out to others. It’s also about monitoring your own links. Regularly audit your backlinks and disavow toxic or spammy links to maintain a healthy backlink profile.

Build high-quality backlinks:

Focus your energy and efforts on earning backlinks from reputable sources with relevant content. Quality always trumps quantity in off-page SEO.

Engage in PR:

Press releases and mentions in reputable publications can boost your online presence and attract authoritative backlinks. It’s also a lovely way to increase traffic to your site and strengthen brand awareness.

An SEO keyword research checklist can assist you in finding the best keywords to target and boost your search appearance.

Since keywords are the cornerstone of successful SEO, mastering this process is essential. This is one of the reasons it’s a high priority on Maslow’s Hierarchy of SEO needs.

As a website owner, learning how to use keyword research tools for SEO is becoming more and more important. But it can be hard to know where to begin.

This Keyword Research SEO Checklist will guide you through the steps to uncover the right keywords that will elevate your site’s visibility and drive organic traffic.

Keyword Research for SEO Checklist

To make the process easier, we’ve broken our keyword research checklist down into bite-size chunks. We list the key factors below and elaborate on them further on in the post.

Identify your competitors and analyze their keywords

Conduct a keyword gap analysis

Find your main “money” keywords

Find long-tail keyword

Find question keywords

Analyze the keyword search intent of the pages that rank

Create a keyword map

Find relevant keywords with low difficulty and high volume

Strategize based on page performance

Prioritize by search volume and difficulty

SEO Keywords Research Explained

Keyword research can be overwhelming, so here is a further explanation of each item on our keyword research checklist. If you have any more questions, don’t hesitate to reach out to our SEO specialist.

Identify Your Competitors and Analyze Their Keywords:

Start by identifying your competitors and analyzing their keywords to gain insights into what works in your niche. Keyword research tools for SEO, like SEMrush or Ahrefs, can help you uncover their top-performing keywords.

It’s worth taking into account the different types of keywords you’re likely to encounter and try to identify them as you go.

Conduct a Keyword Gap Analysis:

Perform a keyword gap analysis to identify keywords your competitors are ranking for, but you’re not. Closing these gaps can boost your SEO strategy. Then, it’s time to optimize your on-page SEO to target these keywords.

Find Your Main “Money” Keywords:

Identify the core keywords that directly relate to your products or services. These are often referred to as “money” keywords. High-value keywords like these are essential for driving high-converting traffic from search engines like Google.

Find Long-Tail Keywords:

Long-tail keywords are specific and less competitive, making them valuable for targeting niche audiences. Use SEO tools like Google’s Keyword Planner or AnswerThePublic to discover these gems.

Find Question Keywords:

Question keywords reflect user intent and are excellent for creating content that directly addresses your audience’s queries.

Tools like “People Also Ask” on Google can help you find these. There are also some keyword research tools like SERanking that offer a ‘questions’ filter for you to explore.

Analyze the Keyword Search Intent of the Pages That Rank:

Understanding the intent behind keywords is crucial. Analyze the search intent of the pages that currently rank for your target keywords and tailor your on page content accordingly.

Create a Keyword Map:

Organize your keywords by mapping them to specific pages on your website. This ensures that each page is optimized for a set of keywords, eliminating keyword cannibalization.

Find Relevant Keywords with Low Difficulty and High Volume:

Look for keywords with a healthy search volume and low keyword difficulty. These are the low-hanging fruits that can yield quick SEO wins.

Strategize Based on Page Performance:

Regularly monitor the performance of your pages and adjust your keyword strategy accordingly. If a page isn’t performing as expected, consider revising your keyword targeting. You can analyze your page performance using free SEO tools like Google Analytics and Google Search Console.

Prioritize by Search Volume and Difficulty:

Prioritize keywords based on a balance between search volume and keyword difficulty. Focus on high-impact keywords that are both attainable and valuable to your site.

Discover our WordPress SEO Checklist and start ticking off items to ensure your site is search engine optimized.

WordPress is extremely popular, powering millions of websites worldwide. It is known for its user-friendly interface and extensive customization options. It is also an SEO-friendly platform, making it the first choice of many.

Unlocking the full potential of your WordPress website in the digital world begins with a strategic approach to SEO. If you’re a website owner, this WordPress SEO checklist is your blueprint for higher rankings, better visibility, and increased organic traffic.

This free SEO checklist will help you make sure your WordPress Search Engine Optimization is properly optimized. Let’s dive into the essential steps to boost your site’s SEO game.

WordPress SEO Optimization Checklist

Improving SEO on WordPress can seem a bit daunting. But if you take it step by step, you’ll be able to give your WordPress site the treatment it needs.

Once you’ve conducted an SEO website audit, it’s time to start ticking items off our WordPress checklist for SEO.

Choose a reliable hosting provider

Install an SEO friendly WordPress theme

Install a WordPress SEO plugin

Set your preferred domain

Check your site’s visibility settings (are you blocking robots?)

Check your indexing permissions (No index tag pages and other low-value content)

Enable SEO-friendly permalinks (remove dates and numbers)

Verify your site with Google Search Console and submit your XML sitemap

Conduct keyword research

Optimize images (size, alt text, file names)

Set custom URLs for pages and posts

Use optimized page headings

Craft unique title tags and descriptions

Use internal linking

Install a cache plug-in to improve site speed

Mark up your pages with schema

SEO Checklist for WordPress Explained

Navigating SEO for WordPress becomes a lot easier as you gain more experience. If you’re not sure what any of the above tasks entail, here is a brief explanation of each task on our WordPress SEO checklist.

If you have any more questions, don’t hesitate to reach out to our WordPress SEO specialist.

However, if you’re confident with your abilities, start exploring our WordPress SEO tips.

Choose a Reliable Hosting Provider:

Your website’s speed and reliability largely depend on your hosting provider. Opt for a hosting service with a reputation for uptime, fast loading times, and excellent customer support. A sluggish website can result in high bounce rates and lower search engine rankings.

I use GoDaddy because it’s convenient, and I haven’t had a problem with them. Their support is decent, but sometimes you’ll have to battle your way through the low-level support until you reach the higher-level guys who know how to help you.

Install an SEO-Friendly WordPress Theme:

Your choice of a WordPress theme has a significant impact on SEO. Opt for themes that are not only visually appealing but also well-coded and mobile-responsive. Clean code and mobile-friendliness are key factors that search engines, like Google, take into account when ranking websites.

My favorite WordPress theme is Astra. It’s great for SEO and it doesn’t slow down your site.

Install a WordPress SEO Plugin:

SEO plugins are invaluable for optimizing WordPress for SEO. Popular options like Yoast SEO and All in One SEO Pack offer features like on-page optimization, XML sitemap generation, and SEO recommendations. They provide an easy and efficient way to manage your site’s SEO.

I’m partial to Yoast SEO. It does everything I need it to and they’re constantly updating the plugin to include the latest features.

Set Your Preferred Domain:

Choose whether you want your website to use the “www” or “non-www” version as the canonical version. This choice helps prevent duplicate content issues and ensures consistent indexing by search engines.

Personally, I prefer the non-www version as it’s cleaner. It also helps people who type your address directly into the search bar (who has time to type in www anymore?).

Check Site Visibility Settings:

In your WordPress settings, make sure your site isn’t accidentally set to discourage search engines from indexing it. Unintentional settings can block search engine crawlers, severely affecting your visibility in search results.

WordPress developers often block robots when they are building a site, but then forget to allow robots when they’re done. And then clients wonder why they aren’t showing up in Google… Always check you aren’t blocking robots (if you install Yoast, they’ll give you a big warning to let you know).

Check Indexing Permissions:

Certain content on your site, such as tag pages or thin affiliate pages, may not provide significant value to users. Use the “noindex” tag or set the pages to “nofollow” to prevent search engines from indexing them.

Yoast SEO offers this functionality in their settings that can aid you in noindexing pages like ‘tags’ or ‘templates’. I’d definitely recommend using this (but only if you know what you’re doing).

Enable SEO-Friendly Permalinks:

Optimize your site’s URLs by using clear and concise permalinks that include relevant keywords. Avoid using default URLs with numbers or dates, as they can be less user-friendly and SEO-friendly.

This can be set up in the WordPress settings under Permalinks. If you can, set this up as soon as possible to avoid redirects.

Verify Your Site with Google Search Console:

Google Search Console is a powerful tool for monitoring your site’s performance in Google’s search results. Verify your site and submit your XML sitemap to ensure Google can index your content effectively.

You can also use GSC to keep tabs on any indexing issues as well as manually ask them to index new content.

Conduct Keyword Research:

Keyword research is the foundation of SEO. Identify relevant keywords for your niche and target them strategically in your content. Tools like Ahrefs and SEMrush can help you find valuable keywords with decent search volumes and manageable competition.

There are also plenty of free options like Keywords Everywhere and SEO Quake that you can use for your site.

Optimize Images:

Images can significantly impact your site’s load times. Resize images to appropriate dimensions, use descriptive alt text, and choose optimized file formats (e.g., JPEG or WebP) to improve user experience and SEO.

You can also use a plugin like Smush or TinyPNG to help reduce the size of your images.

Set Custom URLs for Pages and Posts:

Customize the URLs (permalinks) for each page and post on your website. Include target keywords to make the URLs more SEO-friendly and informative. Also, try to avoid using stop words and numbers.

Use Optimized Page Headings:

Create a logical hierarchy of headings using H1, H2, and H3 tags to structure your content. This helps both readers and search engines understand the content’s organization and importance.

Also, remember that there should only be one H1 per page.

Craft Unique Title Tags and Descriptions:

Write unique and engaging title tags and meta descriptions for each page and post. Incorporate relevant keywords naturally and make them enticing to encourage click-throughs in search results. You can set these using your SEO plug-in.

Also make sure they are the correct length.

Use Internal Linking:

Internal linking is a powerful SEO strategy. Link relevant pages and posts within your site to provide a better user experience. Additionally, it helps search engines discover and index your content more efficiently.

Focus on your Page Depth as well (ideally, no link should be more than three clicks away from the home page). The Yoast plug-in can also tell you how many in-links and out-links each post and page has!

Install a Cache Plugin:

Speed is a crucial factor in SEO for WordPress. Install a caching plugin to improve your site’s load times. Popular caching plugins like WP Super Cache or W3 Total Cache can help reduce server load and enhance user experience.

I use WP Fastest Cache or WP-Optimize, but I haven’t found a clear favorite as of yet.

Mark Up Your Pages with Schema:

Schema markup, also known as structured data, adds context to your content for search engines. It helps search engines understand the content’s meaning and can result in rich snippets in search results, making your listings more eye-catching to users.

Some SEO plug-ins offer an easy way to do this (use it!).
